Advancing IgAN Care: Exploring the Next Wave of Treatments

IgA nephropathy is characterized by immune system dysregulation, primarily involving aberrant glycosylation of IgA1 molecules. This leads to the formation of immune complexes that deposit in the glomerular mesangium, triggering inflammation and glomerular injury. Unlike other glomerular diseases, IgA nephropathy is specifically associated with IgA1, whereas other conditions may involve different immunoglobulins or immune mechanisms. The pathogenesis of IgA nephropathy is distinct due to its unique involvement of mucosal immune responses and genetic predispositions, setting it apart from other glomerulopathies that may have more systemic or varied immune triggers.
