Familial chylomicronemia syndrome (FCS) is a rare genetic disorder characterized by extremely elevated triglyceride levels due to impaired lipoprotein lipase activity. This condition leads to severe hypertriglyceridemia, which can result in recurrent pancreatitis and other complications. FCS is distinct from other forms of hypertriglyceridemia due to its genetic basis and the severity of triglyceride elevation. Management of FCS involves dietary modifications, such as a very low-fat diet, and emerging pharmacological therapies targeting the underlying genetic defects to reduce triglyceride levels and associated risks.
