Updated Treatment Strategies for Pediatric Atopic Dermatitis in 2025, with Ama Alexis, MD

Alexis discussed the latest research in the field and new management strategies for children with atopic dermatitis.

The pediatric atopic dermatitis field has continued to see lots of innovation in recent years with novel therapies and mechanisms. In order to support the appropriate use of new therapies, it is important to stay up to date on the latest strategies in treating atopic dermatitis, including being aware of new therapies, understanding who may benefit from these therapies, and engaging in shared decision making with patients and their families.

Ama Alexis, MD, Clinical Assistant Professor of Pediatrics affiliated with NYU Langone Medical Center and Weill Cornell Medical College, gave a talk at the 2025 American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology (AAAAI)/World Allergy Organization (WAO) Joint Congress, February 28-March 3, in San Diego, California, focusing on the latest updates in the field of pediatric atopic dermatitis.

HCPLive® spoke with Alexis to learn more about the latest updates in the field and she shared some highlights from her talk. She outlined findings of recent research into risk factors of developing pediatric atopic dermatitis, including cigarette smoke and childhood stress. She praised the recent explosion of novel therapies in the atopic dermatitis field and stressed the importance of identifying proper populations for these therapies.

“There's a lot of data that shows that shared decision making is becoming very important to patients, so giving them the right tools to make the right decision is helpful. And just being familiar with all these new therapeutic options, I think it's very exciting, almost hard to keep up with, all the new medications that are coming out. So being familiar with it and then sharing that data with your patients definitely [is important],” Alexis said.
