The discussion centered on recent updates in PAD diagnosis and management, including key takeaways from Ross’ conference presentation, which highlighted symptoms and risk factors for PAD based on new guidelines from the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association. Emphasizing the importance of early detection, Ross offered actionable insights, such as testing those over 50 with diabetes or on statin therapy for PAD and conducting ankle-brachial index (ABI) tests on high-risk patients.

Ross also introduced a validated 9-question screening tool he has been utilizing for more than 25 years, to identify PAD risk factors and symptoms before they become clinically apparent. By implementing such tools, he noted providers can catch PAD earlier and initiate preventative care. Ross also shared practical tips on performing ABIs without advanced equipment and leveraging diagnostic codes for reimbursement, stressing that early intervention can prevent serious complications.

The conversation also explored disparities in PAD care, such as underutilization of statins and aspirin in vulnerable populations, and highlighted educational opportunities through the Society for Vascular Medicine’s annual conference.
